Forsyth County courthouse: what to expect on your court date

Being turned away at the security desk counts as failing to appear. Nobody tells you that, and it is the single most avoidable way a good bond goes bad. Here is what to know before the morning of.

Which building, which court

Forsyth County runs several courts and they are not all in the same place, which is where most wrong turns happen.

  • Magistrate Court, 1090 Tribble Gap Road — first appearance, warrant applications, bond setting for many charges, and civil claims.
  • State Court, at the main courthouse on Courthouse Square — misdemeanors, traffic and most DUI cases.
  • Superior Court, Bell-Forsyth Judicial Circuit, also at the main courthouse — all felonies.
  • Probate and Juvenile Courts — separate calendars, separate rules.

Your paperwork names the court and the courtroom. If it does not, or if the date was changed, call the Clerk of Court on (770) 781-2120 and confirm rather than guessing. Turning up at the right time in the wrong building is still a failure to appear.

Security, dress and phones

Every visitor passes through a screening checkpoint. Plan for a queue, particularly on a busy calendar morning.

Leave in the car: pocket knives of any size, multi-tools, pepper spray, scissors, knitting needles, tools, and anything that could be described as a weapon. Firearms are not permitted in the courthouse regardless of any carry permit.

Dress: courts expect something closer to a job interview than a Saturday errand. No hats indoors, no tank tops, no shorts, no clothing with slogans or images, no visible offensive tattoos where they can reasonably be covered. Judges do send people home to change, and being sent home does not pause your case.

Phones: policies vary by courtroom and judge. Assume it must be switched off — not silent, off — and never photograph or record inside. That one can end in contempt.

Timing and the practical stuff

  • Arrive at least thirty minutes early. Parking around Courthouse Square fills up, and security takes time.
  • Calendar calls are not appointments. Being scheduled for 9 a.m. means everyone on that calendar is scheduled for 9 a.m. Clear the whole morning, and often the whole day.
  • Bring your paperwork — the bond papers, the citation or charging document, and your photo ID.
  • Bring proof of anything you were told to do: class certificates, receipts, screen results, pay stubs.
  • Arrange childcare. Long waits and courtrooms are a bad combination, and some courts restrict children.
If you cannot make a date — illness, hospital, a genuine emergency — call your lawyer and the Clerk of Court before the hearing, not after. A bench warrant is far harder to undo than a rescheduled date.

If a date is missed

The judge issues a bench warrant and the bond goes into forfeiture. Georgia gives the surety a window to return the defendant to custody before the full face value comes due, and there is usually a route back if you move quickly.

Call us on (770) 888-4585 the same day you realise a date was missed. We have brought a lot of people back from this. The ones that end badly are almost always the ones where nobody called for three weeks.
